Fight Fraud!
Detective Robert Howard of the Knox County Sheriff's Office Fraud Division was our speaker on Wednesday. He offered several helpful fraud and crime prevention tips:
Phone Fraud: Don’t ever give out personal information over the phone. A legitimate bank would NEVER ask for it.
Credit Card Fraud: Tape over or scratch out the three digit code on the back of your credit card. Some crooked restaurant employees will copy these numbers and use the numbers to order merchandise that is shipped to an alternate location. Write ‘CHECK ID’ on the back of the card instead of signing it.
Internet Fraud: Avoid deals on Craigslist that look too good. If it sounds too good to be true it usually is.
Car Burglaries: Don’t leave the keys in your car, even if it's in the driveway or garage. Don’t leave any valuables in plain sight. Put valuables in the trunk before leaving your house. People in public lots may watch you put valuables in your trunk.
Katy Davis To Offer Crime Prevention Tips
Katy Davis, Education Coordinator for the Knox County Sheriff’s Office, will be our speaker next
week. She will present information on crime prevention: how to reduce your chances of becoming a crime victim.
Ms. Davis holds Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Education from the University of Tennessee and has been with the Sheriff’s Office for more than 21 years. She has taught child safety programs to Knox County School children, conducted neighborhood watch and crime prevention meetings for community groups, and prepared all child safety programs and materials.
She holds Tennessee state teacher certification in educational curriculum and instruction. She was also a member of the Sheriff J.J.’s Finest team that won the our 6th Annual Adult Spelling Bee in March.
District 6780 OKs District Matching
Grant of $2,500 for Ball Camp Project
PE Bruce Williamson announced that the Rotary Club of Farragut has been approved for a matching District Simplified Grant from District 6780 of $2,500.
Our Partner in Education school Ball Camp Elementary will receive a total of $5,000 since this type of grant matches club funds 1:1 up to $2,500.
The funds will be used to upgrade the auditorium sound system (microphones, speakers, amplifiers). Ashley Lawrence started writing the grant application in March and Bruce finished the application in April for the District Simplified Grant. These grants require the Club to lay out the full amount, complete the project and submit all receipts and a final report in October of this year. At that point, if all paperwork is in order, our district mails us a check for one-half of the total project cost.
Bruce said that as long as you meet specific requirements, the District Simplified Grant is the easiest grant to apply for. “In fact, this grant was fairly simple, and we’re happy to work with other members who want to learn how to apply for Rotary funds to support project ideas," said Bruce.
Welcoming our Visitors and Guests
There were two visiting Rotarians in the house last week: Robert Rotar from the new Sunset Club and Honorary Member Joe Johnson from the Downtown Club.
Mike Singletary, retired University of Tennessee journalism professor, was VP Tom King’s guest. Phill Bradbury invited his son, Nick Bradbury. Capt. Jeff Palmer, the new West District Captain with the Knox County Sheriff's Office, was Ben Harkin’s guest.
Humor
PP Jim O’Brien came up with the humor-for-the-day about a 90-year-old lady who wants to give up golf because she can’t see the ball anymore. Her 103-year-old husband offers to help her. She tees off but he says he saw the ball but can’t remember where it lands.
May's Mystery Rotarian Unmasked
Patty Daughtrey unmasked the May Mystery Rotarian. It was…… VP Tom King!
Patty won a bottle of fine wine complements of Sam Taylor's Dixie Lee Wine & Liquors.
Here were the clues:
1. Our Rotarian enjoyed being a kid. What do they miss the most? "Getting dirty and not worrying about it."
2. Favorite all-time TV show: M*A*S*H
3. If our Mysterian could be an animal, they would be a dolphin. "They look like they have a lot of fun."
4. What's the one skill our Mystery Rotarian would like to have? "Singing and making music."
5. Our Mysterian loved the first car they owned: a Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu Super Sport, 327, red and black, with a Hurst stick shift.
6. If a movie were made about our Mysterian's life, they say it would be called "Are You Kidding Me!!!!"
7. Favorite books? "To Kill A Mockingbird" and "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn."
8. How about a favorite comedian? Our Mysterian has one: Red Skelton.
It must have been the ‘dolphin’ answer that gave him away.
